Letter, [182u?] Mar. 16, Edgefield, S.C., to "Friend Wyley" F. Coleman, Hazlewood P.O., Chester District, S.C.

Undated, 19th-century letter [stampless cover] in which [J.?] M. Carlisle reports contentment with his work as a circuit rider, "I find the people, Saints & Sinners, kind as people can be. I stay sometimes with Methodists, Baptists and some of no profession. Religion is rather low in these parts, a great deal more so than I expected to find it." Carlisle reports that Methodism is not as commonly practiced as elsewhere, and "the Baptists have the sway over this region." Carlisle expresses pleasure at Coleman's news of several weddings among the "young people of Rocky Creek," noting that "the young people of Rocky Creek are beginning to better themselves" despite the "hard times," and expressing hope "for a 'revival' in relgious matters"; and teasing Coleman on his plans to marry, described as the pursuit of "pleasing troubles and troublesome pleasures."
